We woke to the sad news of David Bowie's passing today. He was and always will be an inspiration. RIP.
The show must go on.... so here goes. 2015 was, by our own standards, a reasonably quiet year. 2016 is looking considerably different.
GZH63 // BRAVE TIMBERS - Hope
Two new releases to announce this month and the first comes from Brave Timbers. Their latest album Hope is released February 26th on 180g vinyl and download. There is also a CD edition available from our fine friends Little Crackd Rabbit.
Originally the solo-project of multi-instrumentalist Sarah Kemp, this is their second album following 2010’s For Every Day You Lost, which quickly sold out its limited pressing. Sarah is joined on this album by Andrew Scrogham and together they recorded Hope in a Victorian concert hall in Salford, UK. Their music has also been featured on Second Language’s Minute Papillon and Music & Migration compilations alongside Peter Broderick, Vashti Bunyan, Hauschka and Dustin O’Halloran.
Hope is a reflective, pastoral album that carefully builds its ambient landscapes. These eleven instrumental compositions demonstrate the minimal clarity of Brave Timbers, the piano and violin circling one another, creating a sense of space and terrain. There’s also dreamy timelessness within the music’s flow and weave, from Swimming in the Isar’s gauzy atmospheres to the brittle warmth of The Well Worn Path. Hope has a purity and a simplicity which Brave Timbers bathe in a golden, spectral light.
Pre-orders are now open and the first 50 LP orders come with a free bonus CD of remixes by the likes of: The Declining Winter, Chihei Hatakeyama, RxGibbs, Tobias Hellkvist, Fieldhead, The Green Kingdom, Seamajesty and Summer Night Air. There will also be be a limited number of the remix CD editions available in local record stores.
Orders will ship w/c February 22nd. Please note if you order other items from the store in the same transaction they will all be shipped together. The digital edition will be available from February 26th and all pre-orders will receive a full download of the album on the day of release.
Brave Timbers will be performing a rare live show in Newcastle (UK) on April 7th at the Cumberland Arms. Tickets are on sale now from WeGotTickets.
GZH64DP // ÆMAETH - The Roman // The Dark Peak Series
Our second new release annoucement is in the form of Æmaeth's soundtrack to the independent silent film The Roman. Out February 12th on CD and Download.
This release also marks the beginning of a new limited edition CD-based collection entitled the Dark Peak series. Delivered in editions of 175 these CD's will all follow the same packaging format; Housed in a double-panel, lino printed card sleeve with two card inserts. Recycled card used throughout and placed in an eco-friendly outer plastic bag. Each item is individually printed, cut, assembled, numbered and packaged at Gizeh HQ. We'll be announcing the second installment next month.
Æmaeth is the project of Owen Pegg (A-Sun Amissa / Hundred Year Old Man) and The Roman is his latest piece of film scoring. Pegg has also recently composed scores for The Raindance 10 minute short 2014 winner Man Can and Raindance 2015 'Dark Wave' entry To Catch A Butterfly.
The Roman's 60 minute journey is dissected into 10 pieces and the stark atmosphere remains throughout, with fleeting moments of hope and light emerging from time to time. It's an altogether immersive experience, and one that works equally with or without the accompanying film and imagery. The bone-chilling soundscapes move almost in slow-motion, the claustrophobic tones are bordering on suffocating at times, but there is always sweet relief close at hand; a break in clouds and a crack of light for company.
Upon completion of the film, and its premiere on May 10th 2014, work began to piece the score together into a cohesive album in its own right. Further studio time was logged with long standing friend and collaborator Richard Knox (A-Sun Amissa / Shield Patterns / The Rustle of the Stars / Glissando) to hone and polish the individual musical ‘scenes’ into a flowing album that seamlessly moves between the delicate structured melodies and dense uneasy drones.
Orders will ship w/c February 12th. Please note if you order other items from the store in the same transaction they will all be shipped together. The digital edition will be available from February 12th and all pre-orders will receive a full download of the album on the day of release.
The 24th instalment of our podcast is now available. You can stream it via mixcloud or subscribe to the whole series for free via iTunes.
