ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Nadja is a duo of multi-instrumentalist Aidan Baker and bassist Leah Buckareff active since 2005 and credited as one of the progenitors of the genres ‘drone doom’ or ‘metalgaze’—heavy atmospheric music which combines the darkness and volume of doom metal and industrial with the textures and melodicism of shoegaze and ambient/electronic music. The project has released numerous albums on many different underground labels—Alien8 Recordings, Daymare Records, Essence Music, Hydrahead Records, Gizeh Records, and Important Records, to name a few—and have toured extensively with performances in Europe, Japan, Russia, Australia/New Zealand, and North and South America, including appearances at such festivals as SXSW, FIMAV, Roadburn, Le Guess Who, Incubate, and Unsound. www.nadjaluv.ca
A-Sun Amissa is a music collective founded and led by Richard Knox (The Eternal Return Arkestra, The Rustle of the Stars, Shield Patterns, Glissando) that has featured an array of members and collaborators since it’s formation in 2011. Their sound touches on elements of post-rock, doom, dark-jazz and drone. Recorded output has been released on Richard's own Gizeh label as well as Belgium's Consouling Sounds. A new album Ceremony in the Stillness was released in September - the projects most focused and structured output yet.
Live, the set-up can range from a solo performance to a full band show. Dense and heavy atmospheres provide the backdrop to the sound. Layers of mournful, melancholic and ethereal melodies weave amongst the thundering beats and intense, heaving guitars.
The band has toured Europe several times and performed with the likes of Amenra, Nadja, Helen Money, Jozef Van Wissem, Jucifer and Telepathy.
Members and collaborators in the project include; Richard Knox (The Eternal Return Arkestra, Shield Patterns, The Rustle of the Stars, Glissando), Angela Chan (Tomorrow We Sail, Lanterns On The Lake, The Rustle of the Stars), Owen Pegg (Hundred Year Old Man), Claire Brentnall (Shield Patterns), David McLean (Gnod, Tombed Vision Records), Aidan Baker (Nadja), Colin H. van Eeckhout (Amenra), Gareth Davis (Merzbow, Oiseaux-Tempete), Frédéric D. Oberland (Oiseaux-Tempete, The Rustle of the Stars, FareWell Poetry, FOUDRE!), Aaron Martin, Christine Ott and Jo Quail. www.slowsecret.com
AIDAN BAKER & KAREN WILLEMS
Aidan Baker is a Canadian musician and writer currently based in Berlin, Germany. Classically trained in flute, he is self-taught on guitar, drums, and various other instruments.
As a solo artist, Baker explores the deconstructive sonic possibilities of the electric guitar as a primary sound source, creating music that ranges from experimental to post-rock to contemporary classical.
Baker has released numerous recordings on record labels around the world and has published several books of poetry. In addition to his solo work, he also performs in Nadja, BBS, Caudal, Adoran, Whisper Room, and ARC https://brokenspineprods.wordpress.com/
Karen Willems is a restless seeker. Always digging for more. Digging deeper. Her spontaneous, organic approach to playing has always been able to avoid clichés. Endless turning patterns often form the basis for her musical coloring pages, they are the glue that keep these many temperaments and atmospheres together.
Willems’ quirkiness has become her trademark in the meantime, and it is probably also one of the main reasons why she turns up in such different surroundings (Zita Swoon Group, Jan Swerts, Pascal Deweze, Novastar, Mauro Pawlowski, Jean DL, Aidan Baker, Eric Thielemans, Ultima Vez…) https://about.me/karen_willems
